Bread and Butter Pudding is a classic comfort dessert made with layers of buttered bread soaked in a rich vanilla custard, then baked until golden and perfectly set. This easy bread pudding recipe is ideal for using up stale bread and creates a warm, creamy dessert with a lightly crisp top—perfect for cozy family meals or traditional desserts.

Ingredients

  • Bread slices (preferably slightly stale)
  • Butter (softened)
  • 23 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup raisins or sultanas
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon or nutmeg

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease a baking dish with butter.
  • Butter one side of each bread slice, then cut into halves or triangles.
  • Arrange bread in the dish, overlapping slightly, and sprinkle raisins between layers.
  • In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, and vanilla until smooth.
  • Pour the custard evenly over the bread. Let it soak for 10–15 minutes.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on top.
  • Bake for 30–40 minutes, until golden brown and set in the center.
  • Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Stale bread works best as it absorbs the custard without becoming mushy.For a richer result, use brioche or croissants.Add chocolate chips or fruit for variation.A sprinkle of brown sugar on top adds a caramelized finish.
