This star bread is a soft, fluffy pull-apart bread shaped into a stunning star pattern. Perfect for holidays or special occasions, it can be filled with sweet or savory layers like chocolate, cinnamon, or cheese for a beautiful and delicious centerpiece.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for sweet version)
  • 1/23/4 cup chocolate spread, cinnamon sugar, or preferred filling
  • 1 egg + 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  • Add warm milk, egg, and softened butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled.
  • Punch down dough and divide into 4 equal portions.
  • Roll each portion into equal circles (about 20–25 cm / 8–10 inches).
  • Place the first circle on a lined baking tray and spread filling evenly.
  • Layer remaining circles, adding filling between each layer (leave top layer plain).
  • Place a small glass in the center and cut into 16 equal strips.
  • Twist two adjacent strips away from each other twice, then pinch ends to form points. Repeat to create a star shape.
  • Cover and let rise again for 20–30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Brush with egg wash.
  • Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Cool slightly before serving.

Ensure milk is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.Roll dough evenly for a symmetrical shape.Don’t overfill layers to prevent leaking during baking.Let the bread cool slightly before pulling apart for best texture.Dust with powdere sugar or drizzle glaze for a sweet finish.
