Honey Walnut Squares are rich, buttery dessert bars with a tender shortbread base and a crunchy caramelized honey walnut topping. These easy homemade bars are perfect for holidays, gatherings, or anytime you want a sweet and nutty treat.

Ingredients

  • 200 g all-purpose flour
  • 120 g butter, softened
  • 60 g sugar
  • A pinch of salt

For the topping:

  • 150 g walnuts, chopped
  • 120 g honey
  • 80 g brown sugar
  • 80 ml heavy cream
  • 60 g butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, butter, sugar, and salt until a soft dough forms.
  3. Press the dough evenly into the base of the pan.
  4. Bake for 15–18 minutes, until lightly golden.
  5. In a saucepan, combine honey, brown sugar, butter, and cream. Cook over medium heat, stirring until smooth and slightly thickened.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and chopped walnuts.
  7. Pour the walnut mixture over the partially baked base and spread evenly.
  8. Return to the oven and bake for 15–20 minutes, until bubbly and golden.
  9. Let cool completely before slicing into squares.

Do not overcook the topping to avoid a hard texture.Let the bars cool fully before cutting for clean slices.Toasting walnuts enhances their flavor.You can mix in other nuts like almonds, pecans, or hazelnuts.Add a pinch of cinnamon or orange zest for variation.Drizzle melted chocolate over the cooled bars for extra richness.Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature or 5 days refrigerated.
