These Greek Butter Cookies, also known as Koulourakia, are traditional buttery cookies with a delicate sweetness, crisp exterior, and tender interior. Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time until fully incorporated.
  • Mix in the vanilla extract and orange zest.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture.
  • Add the milk and mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Take small portions of dough and roll them into ropes approximately 6 inches long.
  • Shape the ropes into twists, braids, circles, or other traditional designs.
  • Arrange the shaped cookies on the prepared baking sheets.
  • Whisk together the egg yolk and water to create the egg wash.
  • Brush the tops of the cookies with the egg wash.
  • Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until lightly golden brown.
  • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for several minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely

Notes
