Homemade chocolate truffles are rich, creamy, and indulgent bite-sized treats that make beautiful and thoughtful holiday gifts. Easy to make and naturally gluten-free, they’re perfect for sharing festive cheer with friends and family.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz good quality dark or semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or coconut cream for dairy-free)
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter (optional, for added richness)
  • 1/2 tsp extract of choice (vanilla, peppermint, orange, or almond)
  • Coatings: cocoa powder, powdered sugar, finely chopped nuts
  • Optional toppings: shredded coconut, crushed candy canes, sprinkles, sea salt flakes

Instructions

  1. Chop the chocolate and place it in a heatproof bowl.
  2. Heat cream in a small saucepan until just simmering (do not boil).
  3. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it sit for 2–3 minutes.
  4. Stir until smooth and glossy. Stir in butter and extract if using, until fully incorporated.
  5. Cover and refrigerate for 1–2 hours, until firm enough to scoop.
  6. Use a spoon or small scoop to portion the mixture and roll into balls with your hands.
  7. Roll each truffle in your desired coating (e.g., cocoa powder, nuts).
  8. Chill until ready to serve or package as gifts.

Notes

  • Use high-quality chocolate bars (not chips) for the smoothest texture.
  • Add liqueur or flavored extracts for festive variations.
  • Let truffles sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes before serving for the best texture.
  • Wear food-safe gloves or dust hands with cocoa powder to reduce stickiness when rolling.
  • Truffles can be dipped in melted chocolate for a firm shell.
