Teriyaki Chicken is a flavorful Japanese-inspired dish made with tender chicken coated in a glossy, sweet and savory teriyaki sauce. The homemade sauce, made from soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and honey, caramelizes as it cooks to create a rich glaze that perfectly coats the chicken. Quick, easy, and ready in under 30 minutes, this teriyaki chicken recipe is perfect for weeknight dinners and pairs beautifully with rice, noodles, or steamed vegetables.
4 boneless skinless chicken thighs or breasts
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)
In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, honey, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil.
In another small bowl, mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry.
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the chicken and cook for about 5–6 minutes per side until golden brown and fully cooked.
Pour the prepared sauce into the skillet with the chicken.
Let the sauce simmer for 2–3 minutes.
Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook until the sauce thickens and forms a glossy glaze.
Turn the chicken to coat evenly with the sauce.
Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired.
Chicken thighs tend to be juicier and more flavorful, but chicken breasts work well too.Adjust sweetness by adding more or less honey or brown sugar. For deeper flavor, let the chicken marinate in the sauce for 30 minutes before cooking. The sauce thickens quickly, so stir constantly once the cornstarch slurry is added.
