Tamale Pie is a hearty, comforting casserole that brings together the bold flavors of seasoned meat, beans, and vegetables under a golden, fluffy cornbread crust. Easier to make than traditional tamales, this dish is perfect for weeknight dinners or family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes or 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans or pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup canned corn or frozen corn
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese
  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground meat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in diced tomatoes or tomato sauce, beans, corn, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–10 minutes.
  5. Spread the meat mixture evenly in the greased baking dish.
  6. In a bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, milk, egg, and melted butter until smooth.
  7. Pour the cornbread batter evenly over the meat mixture.
  8. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top, if desired.
  9. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the cornbread is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Let cool slightly before serving.
