Taco Pie is a hearty, comforting dish that combines all the delicious flavors of tacos in a layered casserole. With seasoned ground beef, crispy tortillas, melty cheese, and zesty toppings, this dish is perfect for busy weeknights or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 packet taco seasoning mix (or homemade taco seasoning)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 68 corn tortillas (or flour tortillas)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (optional)
  • 1 can (15 oz) refried beans (optional for extra richness)
  • 1/2 cup salsa
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (for serving)
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce (for serving)
  • 1 medium tomato, diced (for serving)
  • Jalapeño slices or hot sauce (optional for spice)
  • Fresh cilantro (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and diced onion over medium heat until the beef is browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the taco seasoning mix and water to the cooked beef. Stir well and let it simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat.
  3. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or baking dish. Layer the bottom of the dish with a few tortillas, slightly overlapping them to cover the bottom. Spread a layer of refried beans (if using) over the tortillas.
  4. Add half of the seasoned beef mixture and top with half of the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese.
  5. Place another layer of tortillas on top, followed by the remaining beef mixture and the rest of the shredded cheese. Top with another layer of tortillas to complete the pie.
  6. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. For a crispy top, remove the foil for the last 5 minutes of baking.
  7. Let the taco pie cool for a few minutes before slicing. Top with salsa, sour cream, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, jalapeños, and cilantro as desired.
  8. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

For added flavor, you can incorporate sautéed vegetables like bell peppers or zucchini into the beef mixture. For a leaner version, use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.Top with guacamole or sliced avocado for a creamy touch.Make it spicy by adding jalapeños or extra chili powder to the beef mixture.
