Sweet Potato Tots are a healthier twist on the classic tater tots, made with the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes and packed with flavor. These crispy, golden-brown bites are perfect for serving as a snack, side dish, or even a fun appetizer. They’re easy to make, baked (not fried), and full of wholesome ingredients. With a crispy outside and a soft, creamy inside, Sweet Potato Tots are a nutritious yet indulgent treat that both kids and adults will love!

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 2 cups mashed)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (panko breadcrumbs work best for extra crispiness)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for added flavor)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional, for extra flavor)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for drizzling)
  • Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sweet potatoes: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Wash and peel the sweet potatoes, then chop them into small chunks. Boil the sweet potatoes in a pot of water for about 10-12 minutes, or until they are fork-tender. Drain the potatoes and let them cool slightly.
  2. Mash the sweet potatoes: Once the sweet potatoes have cooled enough to handle, mash them with a fork or potato masher until smooth and lump-free. You should have about 2 cups of mashed sweet potatoes.
  3. Make the tots mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese (if using), egg, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together until fully combined.
  4. Shape the tots: Using your hands, scoop out small portions of the sweet potato mixture and roll them into small, bite-sized tots. You can shape them into traditional tot shapes or small cylinders, whatever you prefer.
  5. Bake the tots: Place the tots on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle with olive oil and lightly season with salt and pepper. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  6. Serve: Remove the tots from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve them warm with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ketchup, ranch dressing, or a spicy aioli.
