Shepherd’s Pie is a classic comfort food, made with savory ground meat, vegetables, and a creamy mashed potato topping. It’s a hearty, satisfying dish that’s perfect for family dinners or cozy nights in.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or ground beef)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for sautéing)
  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. For the mashed potatoes: In a large pot, cook the peeled and chopped potatoes in boiling water for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and return to the pot. Mash with milk, butter, salt, and pepper. For a cheesy topping, mix in shredded cheddar cheese.
  2. For the filling: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add ground lamb (or beef) and cook until browned. Drain excess fat. Stir in diced onion, garlic, and carrot and cook for 5-7 minutes until vegetables soften.
  3. Add tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, until the sauce thickens. Stir in peas and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer the meat mixture into a greased 9×9-inch baking dish. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top, smoothing it with the back of a spoon or swirling it for decoration.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown. For extra crispiness, broil the top for 2-3 minutes at the end of baking.
  6. Allow the pie to cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve with a side salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.

Notes

To make it vegetarian, substitute the ground meat with lentils or plant-based meat alternatives. If you prefer a sweeter variation, use sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes for the topping.Feel free to add additional veggies like bell peppers, corn, or mushrooms for extra flavor and nutrition. If you like a cheesy filling, add cheese to the meat mixture before layering the mashed potatoes on top.
