Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
  • 1/2 medium onion, thinly sliced (for gravy)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (for gravy)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (for gravy)
  • 1 tablespoon flour (for thickening)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for gravy)
  • Salt and pepper to taste (for gravy)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined. Form the mixture into 4-6 oval-shaped patties, pressing them firmly to ensure they hold together while cooking.
  2. Cook the patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties to the pan and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned on both sides and cooked through (the internal temperature should reach 160°F or 71°C). Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
  3. Make the gravy: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Thicken the gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste. Gradually add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 5 minutes, or until the gravy thickens.
  5. Combine the patties with the gravy: Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet with the gravy. Spoon the gravy over the patties and let them simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  6. Serve: Serve the Salisbury Steaks hot, smothered in the delicious gravy. This dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.

Notes

Ground Turkey or Chicken: Swap the ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version of Salisbury Steak.Mushroom Gravy: Add sautéed mushrooms to the gravy for a rich, earthy flavor that complements the beef patties.Onion Soup Mix: For a shortcut, you can substitute the seasonings and Worcestershire sauce with a packet of onion soup mix to flavor the gravy.Cheese-topped Salisbury Steak: Melt a slice of cheese (such as Swiss or cheddar) on top of the patties just before serving for a gooey, cheesy twist.
