Ingredients

For the stir-fry:

  • 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or sesame oil)

  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced

  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced

  • 1 medium onion, sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

  • 1 cup snap peas or snow peas

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for a thicker sauce)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

  • 2 green onions, chopped (optional, for garnish)

For serving:

  • Cooked rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the ingredients:
Slice the beef thinly against the grain. Prepare the vegetables: slice the bell peppers, onion, garlic, and grate the ginger. If using cornstarch, dissolve it in 1 tablespoon of water and set aside.

  • Make the stir-fry sauce:
In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, and dissolved cornstarch (if using). Stir well and set aside.

  • Stir-fry the beef:
Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the sliced beef, season with salt and pepper, and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.

  • Cook the vegetables:
In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of oil. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the bell peppers, onion, and snap peas. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are tender-crisp.

  • Combine the beef and sauce:
Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour the stir-fry sauce over the mixture and stir to coat everything evenly. If using cornstarch, the sauce will thicken as it heats. Continue to stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until well coated and heated through.

  • Serve:
Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serve over rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice for a complete meal.
