Old-Fashioned Apple Cake is a moist and warmly spiced dessert filled with tender chunks of apple. Made with simple pantry staples and fresh fruit, it’s an easy-to-make, no-fuss cake that’s perfect for fall or any time you crave a comforting homemade treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup neutral oil (vegetable or canola)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 3 cups apples, peeled and chopped
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Optional: powdered sugar or glaze for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan or bundt pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, granulated sugar, brown sugar, oil, and vanilla until smooth.
  3. In another bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring just until combined.
  5. Fold in chopped apples and nuts if using.
  6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with glaze before serving, if desired.
