A creamy, cheesy, and savory hot French onion dip made with caramelized onions, cream cheese, sour cream, and a blend of melted cheeses. Perfect for parties, holidays, or cozy nights in, best served warm with chips, crackers, or toasted bread.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil
  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme or parsley (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, sauté sliced onions in butter or olive oil over medium heat until deeply caramelized, about 25–30 minutes. Add garlic in the last few minutes of cooking.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, and half of the shredded cheeses. Season with salt, pepper, and herbs if using.
  4. Stir in the caramelized onions.
  5. Transfer the mixture into a baking dish, spreading evenly.
  6. Top with the remaining shredded cheeses.
  7. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown on top.
  8. Serve hot with chips, crackers, or toasted baguette slices.

Notes

Prepare ahead by assembling the dip and refrigerating up to a day in advance. Bake before serving.Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15–20 minutes for best texture.Dip does not freeze well due to dairy content.Variations: add jalapeños for spice, swap cheeses, or garnish with fresh chives.
