Homemade lemon brownies are chewy, tangy dessert bars made with fresh lemon juice and zest, then topped with a sweet lemon glaze. They’re refreshing, citrus-packed, and perfect for spring and summer gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp lemon zest
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 23 tbsp fresh lemon juice (for glaze)
  • 1 tsp lemon zest (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter and sugar until smooth.
  3. Add eggs, lemon juice, and zest, mixing until combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Gently fold dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Do not overbake.
  7. While brownies cool, whisk powdered sugar, lemon juice, and zest to make the glaze.
  8. Spread glaze over cooled brownies, allow to set, then slice into squares.

Notes

Add white chocolate chips for extra richness.Try orange juice and zest for an orange brownie variation.Top with shredded coconut or fresh berries for a twist.Double the recipe for a 9×13-inch pan, adding 5–8 minutes to bake time.Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 days, or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
