Homemade Eggnog is a rich and creamy holiday drink made with eggs, milk, cream, sugar, and warm spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. This classic homemade eggnog recipe is smoother, fresher, and more flavorful than store-bought versions, making it perfect for holiday gatherings, Christmas parties, or cozy winter evenings.
4 large eggs (separated)
½ cup granulated sugar
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until the mixture becomes thick and pale.
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, heavy cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Heat until the mixture is warm but not boiling.
Slowly pour the warm milk mixture into the egg mixture while whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from curdling.
Return the combined mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring continuously until it slightly thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Allow the eggnog to cool slightly, then transfer to the refrigerator.
Chill for at least 2 hours until well cooled.
Pour into glasses and sprinkle extra nutmeg on top before serving.
Heat the milk gently to prevent curdling the eggs. For a frothy texture, whisk egg whites separately and fold them into the chilled eggnog before serving.Freshly grated nutmeg provides the best flavor. The flavor improves after chilling for several hours.Homemade eggnog is best enjoyed within a few days.
