Easy homemade apple cider is a warm, spiced drink made from fresh apples, citrus, and cozy spices. It’s perfect for chilly days, holiday gatherings, or simply enjoying a comforting cup of fall flavor at home.

Ingredients

  • 1012 fresh apples (mix of sweet and tart, like Gala, Fuji, and Granny Smith), roughly chopped
  • 1 orange, sliced (with peel on)
  • 34 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 1 tablespoon whole allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1012 cups water (enough to cover fruit)
  • 1/41/2 cup brown sugar or maple syrup (optional, to taste)

Instructions

  1. Wash and roughly chop the apples and orange—no need to peel or core them.
  2. Place the fruit in a large pot. Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg.
  3. Pour in enough water to cover the fruit (about 10–12 cups).
  4. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 1.5 to 2 hours.
  5. After simmering, mash the fruit in the pot with a potato masher to release more flavor.
  6. Simmer uncovered for another 30 minutes.
  7. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean pot or container, pressing to extract as much liquid as possible.
  8. Taste and sweeten with brown sugar or maple syrup if desired.
  9. Serve hot, or let cool and refrigerate for later.
