Easy French Toast Casserole is a warm, comforting baked breakfast made with cubed bread soaked in a rich egg custard and baked to perfection. Ideal for make-ahead mornings, this dish is soft and custardy inside with a golden, slightly crisp top.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread, brioche, or challah (about 12 cups), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk (whole, 2%, or non-dairy)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional for extra richness)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for greasing dish and optional topping)
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries, chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, gently pressing the bread down to help it absorb the liquid.
  5. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for best results.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). If desired, prepare an optional topping by mixing 2 tablespoons butter, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and dotting over the top.
  7. Bake uncovered for 40–50 minutes, until the top is golden and the center is set.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving. Top with syrup, powdered sugar, fruit, or nuts as desired.

Notes

Use day-old bread for best texture—it holds up better to the custard.Add fruits like berries, bananas, or apples for a fruity twist.Halve the recipe for a smaller batch and bake in an 8×8 or 9×9-inch dish.Cover with foil during baking if the top browns too quickly.Freezes well—cool completely, wrap, and freeze for up to 2 months.
