Easy Cottage Pie is a classic British comfort dish featuring seasoned ground beef and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes, then baked until golden and bubbly. It’s hearty, simple, and perfect for any night of the week.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp flour or cornstarch
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 34 cups mashed potatoes (prepared ahead or fresh)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for mashed potatoes)
  • 1/4 cup milk or cream (for mashed potatoes)
  • Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onions and diced carrots; sauté for 5–7 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in garlic, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1–2 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle in flour and cook for 1 more minute, stirring to combine.
  6. Pour in beef broth and bring to a simmer. Cook until thickened. Stir in frozen peas and remove from heat.
  7. Transfer beef mixture to a baking dish and spread evenly.
  8. Top with mashed potatoes, spreading evenly over the meat layer.
  9. Optional: Sprinkle shredded cheese over the mashed potatoes.
  10. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden on top and bubbling around the edges.
  11. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
