Dirty Rice is a flavorful Southern classic made with ground meat, rice, vegetables, and aromatic spices. The rice soaks up savory flavors, creating a rich, satisfying dish perfect as a main or side to chicken, fish, or grilled meats.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 2 cups chicken broth (or water)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet or Dutch oven. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic. Sauté for 5-6 minutes, until vegetables soften and onions are translucent.
  3. Stir in paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), thyme, black pepper, and salt. Cook for 1-2 minutes to bloom the spices.
  4. Add rice, stirring to coat with spice mixture. Pour in chicken broth (or water) and add bay leaf if using. Bring to a boil.
  5. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed. Add more liquid if needed. Remove bay leaf if used.
  6. Fluff rice with a fork, garnish with parsley, and serve hot.

Notes

For a spicier version, increase cayenne pepper or add fresh chili peppers like jalapeños.For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free breadcrumbs or almond flour.This dish can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
