Creamy Penne Pasta is a comforting, quick-to-make dish featuring tender pasta tossed in a rich, garlicky cream sauce with Parmesan cheese and optional add-ins like chicken or vegetables for extra heartiness.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz penne pasta
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 2 oz cream cheese (optional)
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning or dried herbs
  • Optional add-ins: sautéed mushrooms, spinach, cooked chicken, peas, bacon

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add penne pasta and cook until al dente according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter and add olive oil. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Pour in heavy cream (and cream cheese if using). Stir until smooth and let simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  4. Stir in Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Continue stirring until the cheese is fully melted and sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Add the cooked penne to the sauce and toss to coat evenly.
  6. If using add-ins like spinach or cooked chicken, stir them in and cook until heated through.
  7. Serve immediately with extra Parmesan on top if desired.

Notes

Add red pepper flakes for heat.Swap Parmesan with Pecorino Romano for a stronger flavor.Use dairy-free substitutes to make the dish dairy-free.Thin thick sauce with a splash of pasta water or milk.Store leftovers in the fridge and reheat with added cream or milk for best texture.
