Chicken Parmesan is a classic Italian-American dish with crispy breaded chicken, marinara sauce, melted mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese, perfect for a hearty and comforting meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-style)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil (for frying)
  • 2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. Prepare the Breading Station: Set up three shallow dishes: flour, beaten eggs, and a mixture of breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan, garlic powder, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  3. Bread the Chicken: Dredge each chicken breast in flour, dip in the beaten eggs, then coat in the breadcrumb mixture. Press lightly to ensure the breadcrumbs stick.
  4. Fry the Chicken: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry each chicken breast for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown. The chicken doesn’t need to be fully cooked through, as it will bake later. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Assemble the Chicken Parmesan: Spoon marinara sauce over each piece of chicken, then top with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C).
  7. Garnish and Serve: Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley, and serve with your choice of sides.

Notes

For a spicy version, add red pepper flakes to the marinara sauce or breadcrumb mixture. To make this dish gluten-free, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour. If you prefer a lighter version, you can skip frying the chicken and bake it directly at 400°F (200°C) for about 20 minutes before adding sauce and cheese.
