Ingredients

  • 4 mahi mahi fillets (6 ounces each)

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

  • Zest of 1 lime

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon honey (optional, for added sweetness)

  • 1 ripe avocado, diced

  • 1 small tomato, diced

  • 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped

  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice (for the salsa)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the salsa: In a small bowl, combine the diced avocado, tomato, red onion, and cilantro. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of lime juice, then season with salt and pepper. Toss gently and set aside.

  • Prepare the mahi mahi: Pat the mahi mahi fillets dry with paper towels and season with salt and pepper on both sides.

  • Cook the mahi mahi: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the fillets and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and flaky. Remove the fillets from the skillet and set them aside.

  • Make the brown butter sauce: In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir frequently for 3-4 minutes until the butter turns golden brown and gives off a nutty aroma. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds, then stir in lime juice, lime zest, and honey (if using).

  • Finish the dish: Return the mahi mahi fillets to the skillet, spooning the brown butter lime sauce over the fish. Let it simmer for 1-2 minutes to absorb the flavors.

  • Serve: Plate the mahi mahi fillets and top with the fresh avocado salsa. Garnish with extra cilantro or lime wedges if desired, and serve immediately.

Notes

For added spice, incorporate finely chopped jalapeños into the salsa.Add toasted coconut to the salsa for a tropical twist. You can substitute mahi mahi with swordfish, snapper, or other firm fish.
