Applesauce Cake is a moist, spiced dessert filled with comforting flavors, perfect for any occasion. The natural sweetness of applesauce pairs beautifully with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

Ingredients

  • For the cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the optional glaze or topping:
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk or heavy cream (for glaze)
  • Chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans) for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×9-inch square pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the applesauce and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The cake should be golden brown and firm to the touch.
  7. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk (or cream) until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled cake. Alternatively, sprinkle with powdered sugar or top with chopped nuts.
  9. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

Add 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts, raisins, or dried cranberries to the batter for extra texture and flavor.Increase the amount of cinnamon or add ground ginger for a spicier flavor. For an indulgent twist, drizzle warm caramel sauce over the cake before serving.
